Jimmy Mcgovern’s harrowing drama is powered by its two stars – Sean Bean as a teacher starting a four-year stretch inside, and Stephen Graham as the prison officer who is a good man in a bad system. Not easy to watch, but impressive all the same.

RAVEN ALL4 ★★★

Deeply unsettling six-part Polish drama in which an already troubled police officer is plunged back into his childhood by an investigation into molestation at the orphanage where he was raised. From Friday.

LAUGH LESSONS BBC IPLAYER ★★★ A collection of 20 comedy shorts that showcase young sketch-writing talent from Scotland, Wales, London and the north of England. From Thursday, 6am.

MOTHERLAND BBC IPLAYER ★★★★★ If you haven’t yet seen series three of this parenting comedy, you’re in for a treat. It’s the best yet, because of the way it fleshes out why its stressed characters – from alpha mum Amanda to beta dad Kevin – are who they are, and moves their stories on.

THE SCOTTISH ISLAND THAT WON

THE LOTTERY ALL4 ★★★★

In 2020, the islanders of North Uist and Berneray in the Outer Hebrides won a share of a £3 million jackpot in the People’s Postcode Lottery. This utterly charming documentary takes us to their beautiful home, and asks whether the cash will change the hard-working population.

CELEBRITY GOGGLEBOX ★★★★ ALL4 They’re rarely as witty as the regular Goggleboxers, but it’s always fascinating to glimpse inside the homes of the celebrities as they chat about what they’ve seen on the television. This year’s new pairings include Melanie C and her brother, Paul, Clare Balding and her wife, Alice, and Lorraine Kelly and her daughter, Rosie.
