IN NUMBERS: UEFA European Championship

As the delayed Euro 2020 continues with Wales v Switzerland (1.15pm, BBC1), we look at numbers relating to Europe’s premier international football tournament…

The year the tournament was first staged. It was originally called the European Nations’ Cup, changing to its current name in 1968. The Soviet Union, led by legendary goalkeeper Lev Yashin, won the inaugural event, beating Yugoslavia 2-1 in the final.

The record number of times a country has lifted the trophy, shared by Spain (1964, 2008, 2012) and Germany (1972, 1980 and 1996, the first two as West Germany).

The number of tournament wins for the Home Nation sides. England’s best results were in 1968 and 1996, when they reached the semi-finals. Wales also reached that stage in the last tournament, in 2016, losing 2-0 to eventual winners Portugal. Scotland will be playing at their third championship this year, but have never made it out of the group stage.
