TODAY’S RADIO

SOMETHING UNDERSTOOD

6.05AM, 11.30PM, RADIO 4 ★★★ Mark Tully presents a selection of music, prose and poetry about grandparents. There are lots of fond memories here of inspiring grandparents and devoted grandchildren, plus a musical portrait of evil grandmothers by the composer Rachmaninov.

NATURAL HISTORIES

6.35AM, RADIO 4 ★★★★★ ‘The carp,’ according to Izaac Walton in his 17th-century classic, The Compleat Angler, ‘is a stately, a good, and a very subtle fish.’ In this archive programme, Brett Westwood looks at the history of carp fishing, which has become very high-tech – with electronic bite detectors and all sorts of fancy gear – but still, in the end, requires patience and cunning.

JAZZ RECORD REQUESTS

4PM, RADIO 3 ★★★ Erroll Garner was a brilliant American jazz pianist who never learnt to read music because, as he put it: ‘No one can hear you read.’ Alyn Shipton celebrates the music of Garner, who was born in Pittsburgh 100 years ago this week, began playing the piano when he was three and was performing on riverboats by the time he was 11. His composition Misty is an all-time jazz classic, as you can hear this afternoon.

PAUL WELLER LIVE AT THE BARBICAN

7PM, RADIO 2 ★★★★★ Take the title of this show with a pinch of salt – what we have here is a recording of Paul Weller in concert at the Barbican Centre in London last month. It was a fabulous event with real live people on stage, making music together. Paul was joined by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Boy George, Celeste and James Morrison for a bill that included tracks from The Jam and some of Paul’s greatest solo hits, plus new music that had never been played live before.
