ON DEMAND CHOICE: The Grinder

Tonight marks the season finale of the oddball comedy (9pm, Fox), and all 22 episodes are available on demand, through Sky and Now, until June 30. Here’s our guide to the show…

What’s it about? Rob Lowe stars as Dean Sanderson (centre), an actor who plays a heroic and frequently shirtless lawyer in the TV legal drama The Grinder. When the show ends, Dean decides he’d like to try lawyering for real – all those seasons of shouting ‘objection’ on TV have to count for something, right? So, he moves in with brother Stewart (Fred Savage, above), an actual lawyer, and starts work at the family firm. As it turns out, Dean’s well-honed sense of drama holds more power in the court that Stewart anticipates…

It’s worth watching… If you enjoy Hollywood satire. Rob Lowe’s Dean is the epitome of the vain actor, incapable of talking, taking off his sunglasses or even leaving the room in an undramatic way – even his supposed yearning for a normal life is way, way over the top.

This send-up of celebrity is a lot of fun, and is backed up by sharp writing and a great cast that includes the star’s son, John Owen Lowe, as Joel Zadak.

If you like this, try… 9-1-1: Lone Star (Sky/now), Extras (Netflix), Galaxy Quest (Netflix), Parks And Recreation (Amazon, Netflix, Sky/now), Staged (iplayer),

St Elmo’s Fire (Sky/now), The Player (Amazon), Wild Bill (Britbox).
