ON DEMAND CHOICE: The Beast Must Die
Today, the final part of this revenge thriller arrives on Britbox. Here’s our guide to the Isle of Wight-set series and whether it’s worth watching, plus some other recommendations…
What’s it about? ‘I am going to kill a man. I don’t know his name.’ Britbox’s first original drama opens with these rage-filled words from grieving mother Frances, delivered by Cush Jumbo (left) straight down the lens, as if to the viewer. So, who is the man who killed her son in a hit-and-run, and how will she take her revenge? That’s the business of this five-part drama, in which Frances realises that the police will do nothing, and so inveigles her way into the rich home of odious guilty man George (Jared
Harris, centre) to do it herself.
It’s worth watching… If you like a simple story, told with style. The direction of the plot is obvious from the opening speech, and watching how Frances cloaks her grief with whatever mask is necessary to finish the job is riveting. Jumbo and Harris are both pitch-perfect, and their scenes together are like a chess game.
If you like this, try… Deadwater Fell (All 4), Happy Valley (Britbox), Innocent (ITV Hub), Keeping Faith (iplayer), Liar (Britbox), Mad Men (Amazon Prime), Revenge (Disney+), The Good Fight (Amazon Prime),
The Pact (iplayer), The Victim (iplayer), Tin Star (Sky/now).
