Crisis turns Germans against EU

Coronavirus Crisis

MANY Germans believe the EU is ‘broken’ after the European Commission’s poor performance distributing vaccines, a survey showed. Brussels faced a backlash in March after it tabled proposals allowing it to block vaccine exports to the UK – with Boris Johnson saying this would do lasting reputational damage to the EU. Now a poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) found more than a quarter (28 per cent) of Germans said they had ‘much less confidence’ in the EU since the start of the pandemic. The share of Germany’s population who said the EU’s political system is ‘broken’ jumped from 44 per cent to 55 per cent between November last year and April. Susi Dennison, of ECFR, said: ‘The EU’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic has undermined confidence in its ability to act in the face of crisis.’
