NHS waiting list hits 5m

Coronavirus Crisis

HOSPITAL waiting lists have topped 5million, figures show. Some 5.12million patients were waiting for treatment at the end of April, said NHS England. In total, 64,959 have waited 18 months or more, with 2,722 waiting over two years, many for hip and knee surgery. Tim Mitchell, vice president of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, called the record figure a ‘grim milestone’. He said: ‘This is life-changing surgery – operations that can help people get back to work, that relieve pain and mean people can enjoy a decent quality of life again.’ Prof Stephen Powis, national medical director, said: ‘Average waits for non-urgent care have fallen to 11 weeks, and the number waiting over 52 weeks fell more than 50,000 in April.’
