Golden oldies... Barker and Hodgson lead sports parade

A QUESTION of Sport’s SUE BARKER and former England boss ROY HODGSON are among sports figures to be recognised.

Both were made CBEs. Miss Barker, 65, (below) was a successful tennis player before injury cut her career short and she moved into broadcasting. She became the face of the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage and has been presenter of its Question of Sport quiz show.

‘It’s an absolute honour to be awarded a CBE,’ she said. ‘Myself and all my family are thrilled, especially my mum who turns 100 next week.’

Hodgson, 73, managed England in two European Championships, in 2012 and 2016, and led England at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He also managed Fulham and Crystal Palace. England footballer RAHEEM STERLING was made an MBE for services to racial equality in sport. England player and Liverpool captain JORDAN HENDERSON, was also made an MBE – for his services to sport, and his part in forming the charity, Players Together, which supported NHS causes during the first covid lockdown. Former England midfielder GEOFF THOMAS was made an MBE for his work in raising funds for cancer treatment and research through the Geoff Thomas Foundation. Rugby league star KEVIN SINFIELD, already an MBE, is made an OBE, recognising his career and how he raised more than £2million for motor neurone disease research.
