READER’S QUESTION

MY WILDLIFE pond was crystal clear during April and May. But, recently, it has developed a loathsome green scum. I want to use an algicide just once, to clear it. Will that harm wildlife in the pond?

Henry Greene, via email.

ALGICIDE should not be necessary if your pond can re-balance itself naturally. This year’s odd climate — hot March, cold April and May, then June heat — has unbalanced many ponds.

Floating blanketweed can be reduced by pulling out with a rake. It’s a disgusting job, but removal is far less damaging than using an algicide.

If water lilies and other leaves cover up to 70 per cent of the surface, that provides shade. Despite that cover, oxygenating weed will still receive enough daylight to thrive and will help to balance your pond.
