COMMENT

ONE of the main reasons for the vote to leave the EU five years ago was a widespread feeling that the Government had lost control of our national borders, and a desire to take back control of those borders. And Brexit has given us greater powers over who comes legally into the UK.

Yet we once again see the shocking inability of the authorities to prevent increasing numbers of migrants from entering this country by crossing the English Channel. These arrivals jump all the legal queues, pushing aside the patient and the law-abiding. Can it really be beyond the wit and power of the Government, and of our French neighbours, to devise a joint policy that will deter such rule-breakers?

Their increasing success makes a mockery of law and fairness. The real beneficiaries of this failure are cynical people-traffickers, cruel exploiters who should be opposed by all civilised people.
