Don’t bother says Clarkson after Porto trip from hell

By Holly Bancroft

JEREMY CLARKSON has told how a day trip to the Champions’ League final in Portugal turned into a bruising holiday from hell.

After jetting into Porto to cheer on his team Chelsea, who beat Manchester City, the TV host was punched in the head, stranded when his private jet broke down and then had his Covid test certificate expire.

The 61-year-old was on a ten-strong fathers and sons day trip. But outside the stadium he became separated from the rest of his party and surrounded by boisterous City fans. ‘They decided to express their good-naturedness by punching me in the side of the head,’ he wrote in The Sun newspaper.

Turning up at the airport for the return flight, he discovered his party’s chartered jet had broken down. After finding a ‘wine and business’ hotel where they spent the night, the star discovered they would need to take another Covid test and queued for two hours to get it. ‘But the plane was still broken,’ he wrote. ‘I came up with another plan which was: To charter another jet.’

He concluded: ‘Porto is a beautiful city, but ... it was 21 degrees over there. And it was 24 degrees when we got back to Britain, having landed in Birmingham at two in the morning. Nothing wrong with Birmingham, of course. Except that all our cars were 70 miles away, at the airport in Oxford.

‘I would not recommend foreign travel at the moment.’
