The Statue Wars: One Summer In Bristol

BBC2, 9pm A merchant and slave trader who died 300 years ago, Edward Colston was hardly known outside Bristol until last year. But in the city, his philanthropic legacy had become controversial in recent times, as anti-racism campaigners demanded his statue be removed – and forcibly achieved their aim in June 2020 (right) amid the worldwide protests after the death of George Floyd.

This documentary follows city mayor Marvin Rees as he deals with the aftermath, while the film-makers also speak to local residents, some from older generations who felt the statue was a part of their lives but still sympathised with the protesters. Rees comes across as an empathetic figure whose left-wing politics don’t stop him from taking responsibility for the whole city, while also facing threats directed at him and his family.
