BE A MEDICAL GUINEA PIG – AND EARN £3,000

YOU can do your bit for science and make thousands of pounds for yourself if you are willing to take part in a clinical trial.

By the time a drug is tested on humans, it has been through countless other tests, so it should be perfectly safe.

The types of drugs tested vary – from potential flu cures to treatments for cancers.

But it is medical experts who decide what you will get and often leave patients in the dark about the drug being tested.

Any tests you take part in should be authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). Typically, participants will be aged 18 to 65 and in good health.

Screening usually weeds out at least half of applicants. Outfits such as FluCamp can pay £3,000 for a 12-day stay. Another is Covance, trialling drugs and paying perhaps £750 for a threenight stopover and later visits.

Others to consider include Quotient Sciences and Synexus.

Those conducting clinical trials must provide insurance to participants in order to protect them financially in the event of serious injury or illness. It is worth scrutinising this cover before signing up. Specialist clinical trial insurance brokers include Gallagher and Macbeth.
