JOHN TAVENER’S music is hauntingly beautiful, including his most famous work, Song For Athene, which was performed at Princess Diana’s funeral at Westminster Abbey. To mark the tenth anniversary of Tavener’s own death, the BBC Singers, conducted by Daniel Hyde, join the Cambridge Music Festival to pay tribute to the work of the London-born composer inside the glorious King’s College Chapel in Cambridge. Cellist Natalie Clein (pictured) performs too in a concert that also features music by Judith Weir, John Rutter and Olivier Messiaen. TODAY’S painting to look at as you listen to MOVING PICTURES (11.30AM, RADIO 4) is Winter Scene On A Canal by 17th-century Dutch artist Hendrik Avercamp — a panorama with a whole town out on the ice. It’s a people-watching delight, every scene filled with tiny figures, each with a story of their own. Sledding, shopping, a quick round of colf: it’s an encyclopaedia of Dutch winter fun. Get your skates on and find the picture at bbc.co.uk/movingpictures.
