The star of ITV’S new crime drama reveals five secrets from the set

BEN MILLER PROFESSOR T Tomorrow, 9pm, ITV

1 My character, Jasper Tempest [above], is a professor of criminology at Cambridge University who has OCD. I actually had OCD in my 20s and had therapy to treat it. Mine was like wanting to repeat the same patterns of behaviour or sit in the same chair, counting things continually. Professor T is super-controlling. He’s phobic of germs and wears latex gloves. Unlike me – I felt very vulnerable admitting to my OCD – he has no embarrassment about it.

2 This was originally a Belgian TV series – I watched every episode and it’s fantastic. We completely rewrote the scripts, so the details are different.

We’ve cherry-picked the stories we felt would work in Cambridge.

3 It was so bizarre being in Cambridge 30 years after going to university there. It’s one of those cities where you feel like no time has passed. I went to find The Gardenia, the poshest kebab shop in the world, where we went every night as students. All the same shops are there too.

4 We also filmed in Belgium and it was relaxing to be on a set and not be able to understand what anyone is saying because they’re speaking Flemish. It can be distracting when people are talking about fixing the lights or solving a problem. I found it a lot less stressful.

5 I’ve got young kids and my wife Jessica is at home, so while I was away we did lots of Zoom calls. We’d both be pottering away in our kitchens and chattering away like we were in the same room. Though my then five-year-old daughter didn’t really get it, which was hard.
