9PM, BBC1 ★★★★ Switching between two time periods, this series demands your concentration – although it helps that Tcheky Karyo’s Baptiste has rather more hair in the forward timeline. This second episode is even more bleak and brutal than last week’s opener, if you can imagine, as Emma Chambers (Fiona Shaw, right) tries to persuade a broken Baptiste to return to the case – with the trump card she has in the boot of her car. The captive Andras insists he wants to help and is – like many of the characters in this series, it seems – a man in search of forgiveness.
