TODAY’S RADIO

WAITING FOR THE VAN

5PM, RADIO 4

Drug-related deaths are far, far higher in Scotland than anywhere else in Europe. Overdoses, dirty needles, mixing drugs and cutting heroin with other substances, including rat poison, contribute to this grim statistic. Peter Krykant, a former addict, bought a minivan and kitted it out with sanitisers, needles and a medication that reverses opioid overdoses. His work is illegal, but it saves lives. We here from Peter, his family and the drug users who rely on his work.

SYD

7.15PM, RADIO 4

Arthur Smith’s father, Syd, fought at El Alamein, then was captured and imprisoned in Colditz. After the war, he joined the Metropolitan Police, but, having been a prisoner

himself, had a marked reluctance to arrest anyone. Arthur tells Syd’s story in this fond and funny radio version of his Edinburgh Fringe comedy show.

BARRY HUMPHRIES’ FORGOTTEN MUSICAL MASTERPIECES

9PM, RADIO 2

Sexual scandals of the early 20th century inspired song lyrics full of innuendo and hidden messages. These songs rarely made it into BBC programmes, but Barry Humphries puts that right in this third of a four-part series on neglected songs. Tonight’s risque selection includes music from Marlene Dietrich and Ted Weems.

KATIE PIPER
