Matt Damon left the franchise (temporarily, as it turned out), but the loss of its star did not kill it off. In this instalment, directed by Tony Gilroy – who wrote the previous films, so knows the material – Jeremy Renner is the agent/test subject, and handles action and acting with equal aplomb.

Steven Soderbergh’s disturbing psychological thriller was shot entirely on an iphone – not that you’d notice. The Crown’s Claire Foy pushes far away from playing the young Queen to star as a woman who’s been sectioned. Does she need to be in hospital, or is the truth far more sinister?
