IN HIS OWN WORDS: Bruno Tonioli

As he continues his Great British Road Trips with Craig Revel Horwood (8pm, ITV), here’s what the Strictly Come Dancing judge has to say about his life and career…

On deciding that he wanted to become a dancer: ‘I had my Saturday Night Fever moment where I walked into the club and got on the dance floor to do a turn, and everyone watched me and I thought, “I think there might be something in this.”’

On escaping bullies when he was younger: ‘One night, they chased me out of a club with a broken bottle and pinned me up against a wall. I managed to chat my way out of it with a bit of wit and imagination, but I was very lucky.’ On whether he will watch his replacement, Anton Du Beke, on the new series of Strictly later this year: ‘Watching Anton would be not fair. It would be weird, like watching an ex with someone new – you just get on with it, honey.’

On his idea of a holiday paradise:

‘The tropics. I’m a sucker for turquoise sea, white beaches and palm trees.

I’ve been to the tropics every year since I could afford it. It’s the perfect place to unwind. I can chill out, read, do a bit of yoga.’

On becoming a silver fox last year: ‘I was thinking about it for a long time. You just basically need to shave your head and start again – this is the time. It’s kind of liberating, and I’m happy people like it.’
