WINE LIST

A quirky Romanian and a Tasmanian that’s devilishly good value are in the mix this week

MATTHEW JUKES’

1 NV JANSZ TASMANIA, PREMIUM ROSÉ, AUSTRALIA £15.99, frazierswine.co.uk; £17.95, slurp. co.uk; £16, winedirect.co.uk

Although I’ve been recommending loads of English rosés this year, none of them comes close to this scintillating Tasmanian in terms of value for money. I’m sure we’ll make good sub-£20 sparklers in time, but for now, this is the wine to go for.

2 2019 HILL-SMITH ESTATE, CHARDONNAY, EDEN VALLEY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA

£11.99, reduced to £9.99 until Tuesday, Waitrose Australia makes some of the world’s finest chardonnays, which, in cooler regions, boast wonderful finesse and length of flavour on the palate. This ethereal version is a joy with the Chargrilled Chicken & Broccoli With Yoghurt Dressing.

3 2020 VARA, ROSÉ, ROMANIA £7, reduced to £6 until 2 August, Marks & Spencer Made from merlot and the ancient, indigenous Romanian grape feteasca neagra, this is a gentle, smooth, rose petal and raspberry kissed wine with a clean and dry finish. It’s the perfect partner for the Crab Lettuce Cups With Mango & Avocado Salsa.

4 2020 PAYS D’OC CABERNET SYRAH, FRANCE £6, Marks & Spencer This is a crazy bargain for such a smooth, easy-drinking red wine. The blend of grape varieties works a treat here, with cabernet sauvignon bringing the class and syrah providing a touch of wildness. Drink it with the Lamb Salad With Aubergine, Quinoa & Pomegranate.
