WOOLSTHORPE MANOR LINCOLNSHIRE

The birthplace of Isaac Newton (above), it was also here that in 1666 he watched an apple fall from a tree and discovered the law of gravitation. An apocryphal tale? Apparently not, for Newton told the story himself. The ancient apple tree still exists – and people have been coming to visit it ever since. Now around 400 years old, it still produces a good crop of fruit. In 2015 apple pips from the tree were taken to the International Space Station by astronaut Tim Peake.
