THE LIFE AND DEATH OF COLONEL BLIMP

(1943) U 9.10AM, BBC2 HHHH Powell and Pressburger’s wartime comedy drama starring Roger Livesey, Deborah Kerr and Anton Walbrook was controversial in its day, mainly due to the presence of a sympathetic German character.

Today, it is a much-adored British classic.

MOVIES ★★★ Robert Rodriguez rounds off his Mexico trilogy with this violent western, featuring the return of Antonio Banderas (below, with Salma Hayek) as El Mariachi, a musician with a sideline in killing. Here, the hit man becomes embroiled in international espionage involving a psychotic CIA agent (Johnny Depp).

Joel Edgerton’s thoughtful fact-based drama stars Lucas Hedges as Jared, the gay son of a Baptist preacher, who unwillingly participates in a church-supported conversion programme after being outed to his parents. Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are mum and dad.

TRUE GRIT (2010) 15 ◆ 11.25PM, ITV4 ★★★★

The Coen brothers’ remake of the western classic, with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn. The film belongs as much to Hailee Steinfeld’s Mattie (above, with Bridges), the girl out to avenge her father’s murder. It was nominated for ten Oscars, but surprisingly won none.
