Korean historical drama, set in the early 20th century, during Japan’s occupation. Song Kang-ho stars as a policeman who works with the Japanese government to apprehend resistance fighters. After an old friend is killed, he questions his allegiance.

SUNDAY THE ITALIAN JOB (2003) 12

Fans of the original won’t be too put out by this remake, which updates the heist caper in a sensible direction. Charlize Theron and Mark Wahlberg (above) are on the crew driving a fleet of Mini Coopers into action.

HORTON HEARS A WHO! (2008) U

Animated adventure aimed squarely at very young viewers, featuring Jim Carrey as the voice of Dr Seuss’s cutely cumbersome elephant, Horton. He might be big, but Horton takes care of his little friends, including Morton the mouse (Seth Rogen).

BBC1 HHHH Another excellent claymation comedy from the British Aardman studio, a slightly spooky tale in which our cheese-loving hero, Wallace, and his plucky dog, Gromit (above), are in a spot of bother with a mutant bunny rabbit.

PREMIERE Bo Burnham made his name on Youtube and this, his debut feature, is far removed from his zany online antics. It’s a thoughtful coming-of-age drama for the angst-inducing social media age, following Elsie Fisher’s 13-year-old Kayla.

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE

Director Neil Jordan’s lusty adaptation of the first of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, with Tom Cruise as the seductively wicked bloodsucker Lestat. Brad Pitt is the reluctant conspirator ruing the day he ever met him, with Christian Slater as the human chronicler.

11.55AM, TALKING PICTURES TV HHH Jane Wyman stars as the stylish New Yorker who makes a big impression on a small town in Texas – and on Charlton Heston’s rugged rancher – when she opens a dress shop (below). Legendary costume designer Edith Head appears in the film’s fashion show.

First of two superb Michael Mann thrillers – see Manhunter tomorrow (right). In a rare performance as a villain, Tom Cruise (below) plays a hit man who hires Jamie Foxx’s taxi driver and, over the course of one night, delivers death and danger across Los Angeles. Mann does wonders with the LA twilight.

PREMIERE Subtitled The Extractors, this stars Sylvester Stallone, Dave Bautista and 50 Cent, who return to break into a prison in Latvia known as ‘Devil’s Station’ and rescue hostages being kept there by mercenaries.

Shailene Woodley is on career-making form, playing a teenager with cancer who meets a cute boy (Ansel Elgort) in group therapy – and slowly lets down her guard.

Another inventive stop-motion animation from studio Laika. In an almost Dickensian city governed by strict rules, Eggs (above, with Winnie) is a human boy being raised by rubbish-collecting trolls, while the cheeseloving rich indulge themselves above ground.

In this Hallmark mystery series, Lacey Chabert is the puzzle expert who teams up with Brennan Elliott’s New York detective to solve crimes. This time, they investigate the murder of a magician who dies on stage.

Drenched in cool blue light, Michael Mann’s adaptation of Thomas Harris’s Red Dragon (remade under that name in 2002) is superb. William Petersen is the FBI man chasing a serial killer – and having an uneasy reunion with his nemesis, Hannibal Lecter (Brian Cox).

The great cinematographer Jack Cardiff directs this uneven crime drama, in which murder and deception are connected to a rare stamp. James Booth stars as a detective investigating when a woman’s body is found near Windsor Castle.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) 18

s 11.05PM, 5STAR HHHH Wes Craven’s classic slasher horror gave us a hugely popular demonic villain in Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund, right). Heather Langenkamp is one of the teens being stalked in their sleep by a terrifying ghoul, the killer with a razor-gloved hand.
