In 2014, director Matthew Vaughn, with co-writer Jane Goldman (wife of Jonathan Ross), introduced us to a new kind of Secret Service. That film was a smart spy comedy full of action, gadgets, fine tailoring and more than a smattering of cheeky humour. This sequel follows Eggsy (Taron Egerton, above) and Merlin (Mark Strong) to America after a catastrophe at their London HQ. Stateside, they meet their US counterparts, Statesman, all named after drinks. With Whiskey (Pedro Pascal) and Ginger Ale (Halle Berry), they team up to bring down a drug cartel boss (Julianne Moore) with a dastardly plan. The Covid-delayed prequel, The King’s Man, will finally be released in cinemas at Christmas.
