PICK OF THE DAY

UNIVERSE 9PM, BBC2

★★★★

For his new, four-part series, Brian Cox (right) is, as ever, filled with awe and wonder as he gazes into the cosmos. He will be tackling big questions – How did the universe come to be? Why are we here? Where will it all end? – by piecing together grains of knowledge that we, intrepid human explorers, have gathered along the way. In this first episode, he examines the sun and

200 trillion stars to chart the story of creation. Future episodes will search for alien worlds, visit the Milky Way and delve deep into the darkness of a supermassive black hole.

THE REPAIR SHOP 8PM, BBC1

★★★★

The first of tonight’s four projects is a team effort for metal man Dominic Chinea and upholstery expert Sonnaz Nooranvary. Together, they set to work repairing a stunning 1960s barber’s chair for a family business. There’s also an Iranian musical instrument, a German roulette machine and a worn-out carousel horse.

SHETLAND 9PM, BBC1

★★★★

Time is always of the essence for DI Jimmy Perez, who is not one to sit around waiting for news – or permission. As he investigates the dive-boat death, the return of convicted killer Donna Killick brings tension; worse, she appears to revel in her notoriety. Elsewhere, Galbraith’s personal life comes under scrutiny.

EXTRAORDINARY EXTENSIONS 9PM, CH4

★★★

This week, Tinie Tempah is going underground. He visits an £11 million mega-basement in London’s super-swanky Knightsbridge, in a building that was once home to legendary ballerina Margot Fonteyn. He also follows a subterranean extension in leafy Hertfordshire. SA
