11AM, RADIO 4 HHHH Lytton was a pretty riverside village, with painted wooden houses and 250 residents, located in British Columbia. Winters there are mild and the summers are hot. Temperatures this June reached nearly 50°C, the highest recorded in Canada; then, Lytton burned to the ground. Neal Razzell looks at the story behind the fire.

Born in Melbourne, Rebecca Chan grew up in Australia, has degrees in medicine and arts, and is an orchestra leader and solo violinist. Today, she and the Philharmonia Chamber Players will perform Schubert’s Octet. It’s a bright, breezy work full of hummable

tunes, but has its moments of darkness; Schubert wrote it during a period of pain and sadness.

The National Theatre of Brent knowsnofearwhenitcomesto handling mighty events. This twoman team will take on any subject, however epic, to bring real-life dramas to the British public. This afternoon, Desmond Olivier Dingle (Patrick Barlow) and Raymond Box (John Ramm) re-enact – in their usual tongue-in-cheek manner – what they describe as the ‘52-year centenary of the historic first walking on the moon, as it was done by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Phil Collins’.

THE FOLK SHOW WITH MARK RADCLIFFE 9PM, RADIO 2

Stu and Debbie Hanna, who make up the duo Megson, join Mark for a session of new and traditional songs that draw on their Teesside heritage. The duo can play the guitar, accordion and mandolin, throwing in the tin whistle and kazoo for good measure. SJ
