The actresses playing the characters’ older and younger versions mirrored each other’s portrayals. ‘Contact lenses, mannerisms – all were used to make us match up,’ says Christina Ricci. what happens in the woods doesn’t always stay in the woods!’

In flashback scenes we see bloodied bodies being dragged through the snow, survivors brandishing guns and strange ceremonies taking place. There’s more than a hint of the mystic linking the past with the present, and a strange geometric symbol we see in flashbacks to the crash site has

started appearing on buildings in present-day suburban New Jersey.

Comparisons between Yellowjackets and William Golding’s novel Lord Of The Flies, in which a group of boys turn feral after becoming stranded on an uninhabited island, are unsurprising. ‘Although I think our show is very different, it shows a group of people going to previously unseen lengths to survive in the wilderness,’ says Juliette. ‘One of our co-stars described it as Fifty Shades Of Cray, as in 50 shades of crazy, because the teammates go to such dark places. Yellowjackets is about what you do when you’re fighting for your life, and the consequences of the actions you take.’

James Peachey Yellowjackets starts on Thursday at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
