PICK OF THE DAY

GREAT BRITISH MENU 8PM, BBC2

★★★★

Host Andi Oliver and Great British Menu veteran Aktar Islam (right) welcome four chefs from the central region as the first week of heats gets under way. This year’s banquet will celebrate 100 years of great British broadcasting, and Dad’s Army proves a popular choice as inspiration in this first round. On Thursday, it’s all change at the judges’ table, with chefs Tom Kerridge and Nisha Katona joined by comic Ed Gamble, co-host of the Off Menu food podcast – plus this week’s guest judge, Cat Deeley – to sample the dishes from the two highest scorers.

This second episode begins in 1964, with Ronnie and Reggie Kray at the very top of their game. Political scandal had been good for business and, as they revelled in their celebrity status, mingling with singers and film stars, the Krays started to believe that they – and their criminal empire – were invincible.
