My weekend

JUSTIN WEBB

What I’m binge-watching... The US comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, starring Larry David as a socially inept TV producer, which I love because it’s so un-pc. It’s a way of being un-woke without having to watch Piers Morgan.

What I’m reading... Iris Murdoch’s The Sea,

The Sea, which is a wonderful, rich novel about obsession and the male ego. Also, Material Girls by Kathleen Stock, the Sussex University professor forced out of her job by trans-rights protestors. It’s a beautifully clear and interesting book.

What I’m listening to... I like silence more than anything else, possibly because I went to a Quaker school, where silence is prized. My ideal listening is the sound of birds in the garden. The last thing I listened to with great care on Radio 4 was Jeremy Bowen’s brilliant series about the Middle East.

What I’m cooking... I do roasts and risottos, for which I follow the River Cafe Cookbook. Their risotto using an entire bottle of Valpolicella is amazing. My favourite restaurant... The Graze steak bar in Bath, where I’m from, because it overlooks the station and I like looking at the trains. I was a very keen trainspotter when I was young and it’s odd to look out and see the ghost of the young me. My favourite walk... On the hills behind Bath. I find that immensely satisfying.

My perfect weekend away... I like city breaks, so Copenhagen maybe. I’m not a huge art gallery person but I like to relax and see streets and people I don’t normally see. The attraction there would be the architecture and those little things that make a place interesting and different, like steam baths and saunas in the hotel.

Best recent outing... Going to see Bath play rugby. Not for the result as they’ve had a dismal season, but to celebrate the fact that people can gather together again. I’m still at the stage of being amazed to be part of a large crowd, and it’s fantastic that sport has survived the pandemic.

As told to Andrew Preston Justin’s book The Gift Of A Radio is out now. Justin will be speaking at the Daily Mail Chalke Valley History Festival on 24 June. Tickets at cvhf.org.uk.
