SATIRICAL THRILLER

‘What if there’s a chance that this is just one big weird misunderstanding?’ asks one of the characters about two-thirds of the way into this racially charged dark comedy, which plays out over one increasingly tense night of partying at an American college. It starts out resembling a comedy from the 1980s, with two very different black friends – one keen on studying, one keen on parties – planning the night out to end all nights out. That fateful evening takes a turn when Kunle and

Sean (Donald Elise Watkins and RJ Cyler, above) discover an unconscious girl, and that’s when the tension begins – they keep trying to help her and people keep misunderstanding their intentions, until the drama builds to a point where you think you just can’t stand it. It’s then, though, that the film becomes something else entirely – something much more real, human and rewarding.
