THE FEAR INDEX ADAPTATION OF ROBERT HARRIS NOVEL

Watching Josh Hartnett in this thriller, based on Robert Harris’s bestseller, you start to fear for his health. The actor is almost permanently tense as Alex Hoffman, a brainy physicist who creates some fancy artificial intelligence software to make millions on the stock market. Things don’t go to plan – why would we be watching if they did? – and an attack at Alex’s home suddenly makes him question everything, including his sanity. Cue that tense expression, which lasts for all four parts. Let’s hope Hartnett got a shoulder massage afterwards, at least.

BABYLON BERLIN PERIOD GERMAN NOIR

Did you know that in Weimar Berlin condemned prisoners were beheaded – with an axe? Who says TV can’t be educational? This terrific, big-budget German 1920s crime drama is a global hit with spectacular set pieces, thrilling action and compelling plots. Its main characters are detective Gereon Rath and sexy sidekick Charlotte Ritter, who take on allcomers in a lovingly re-created interwar Berlin. Look out for a cameo from Bryan Ferry as a louche nightclub singer.

LITTLE BIRDS TEMPTATION IN TANGIER

Juno Temple is excellent as American heiress Lucy in Sky’s erotically charged drama, about a woman who has been controlled by men all her life – her father, her doctor and now her husband, an English lord she barely knows. Her new spouse also turns out to be gay, so Lucy (above right, with Yumna Marwan as her friend Cherifa) must satisfy her growing urges elsewhere, in a racy six-parter that unfolds in the heady atmosphere of 1950s Tangier. The story has an almost hallucinatory feel at times, and it highlights just how good an actress Temple is – watch her in Apple’s Ted Lasso after this.

COMEDY FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS KIWIS HIT THE BIG APPLE

New Zealanders Bret Mckenzie and Jemaine Clement (below) comprise the musical comedy act Flight Of The Conchords, and play naive versions of themselves trying to achieve success in New York City in this wonderful sitcom. The humour is dry and offbeat and the songs don’t stop the comedy, as they might in some shows – they’re very funny. Here’s a sample lyric: ‘You’re so beautiful, you could be a part-time model.’
