THE BIG MOVIE PREMIERE

Michael Caine stars as an angry author forced out of retirement

BEST SELLERS ODD COUPLE COMEDY

When Best Sellers was released, Michael Caine (right) claimed it was his final film – and that he was now a writer. Thankfully he’s since denied that retirement, but this would have been a fair note to go out on, with Caine on

hair-raising form as a widowed, hard-drinking writer dragged out of solitude by a young publishing executive in need of a hit. She’s played by Parks And Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza, and they make a good odd couple in this funny drama, a film that’s at its best when Caine’s novelist is at his worst, and when it finds something real between those two main characters. Whatever you think of the movie’s other, more saccharine moments, it’s all worth it to see Caine on such terrific form – long may he act.
