MOVIE CHOICE

ODETTE (1950) PG 1PM, BBC2

★★★★

The true story of a Frenchwoman who spied for the Brits in occupied France. Anna Neagle (whose husband, Herbert Wilcox, directs) is Odette, while Trevor Howard adds just the right stiffness of upper lip as the fellow agent she would eventually marry. Marius Goring plays her dastardly Nazi captor.

WHAT WOMEN WANT

(2000) 12 ◆ 9PM, 5STAR ★★★ Mel Gibson

(below left) plays an advertising executive who – in true movie magic style – acquires the ability to read women’s minds. He gets the chance to rebrand himself from chauvinist dinosaur to modern man when he sets out to win over his new boss (Helen Hunt).

DARK PLACES

(2015) 15 ◆ 9PM, GREAT! MOVIES ★★★ Charlize Theron’s performance as a damaged survivor of a massacre holds this thriller together.

As a child, her testimony convicted her brother of killing her family, but years later, as she investigates, she suspects he is not the killer after all. It’s based on the novel by Gone Girl’s Gillian Flynn.

DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN (1985) 15

◆ 11.40PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ This lively comedy thriller gave Madonna her finest acting hour. She plays a free-spirited urbanite showing a mousy housewife (Rosanna Arquette, left, with Madonna) how to have a good time.
