THE SECRETS SHE KEEPS

You would be well advised to watch the first series of this hit Australian psychological thriller, all six parts of which are available on BBC iplayer, ahead of the show’s return tonight. It’s based on Michael Robotham’s novel, which is itself inspired by the kidnapping of newborn baby

Abbie Sundgren from Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical

Centre in 1994 by a woman pretending to be a nurse. The first series moved events to Sydney and introduced us to two very different women: shelf stacker Agatha Fyfle (played by Downton’s Laura Carmichael with gentle eyes and a shy smile) and the seemingly

perfect influencer Meghan Shaughnessy (Jessica De Gouw, above right with Carmichael). The one thing the two women do share is that they are both pregnant – or so we think – but after a chance encounter at the supermarket where Agatha works, their lives become entangled in the most horrible way possible when Meghan’s baby goes missing. The fallout from that disappearance is still being felt as we return for series two as secrets about both women are starting to emerge. The show was a big hit Down Under, even with Abbie, who, 26 years after she was kidnapped and now living in New Zealand, admitted she was transfixed after chancing upon her own story on TV.
