Even more bleak and stormy than that other location-specific crime drama Shetland (Wednesdays, BBC1), this also follows a stubbly DCI as he hunts murderers

and more in the stunning landscape he calls home – this time the rugged coastline around Aberystwyth in Wales. DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington, above) does a lot more running than Shetland’s more homely Perez (Douglas Henshall) – it helps to distract him from the emotional pain he’s in, you see. Mathias is cut very much from the tortured cop cloth and he’s not one to crack a smile. His emotional baggage doesn’t distract him from crime solving, though, even when it gets close to home. Over three series and several compelling self-contained mysteries, we get to know Mathias and his secrets and, just as Perez’s story will reach a conclusion in the current series of Shetland, so too does the story of DCI Mathias.
