BURIED

authentic prison saga

Bleak and raw, this prison drama could be too much were it not for Lennie James (right) in the lead role. He’s a first-time prisoner, a family man who’s serving ten years for attempting to shoot his sister’s rapist. There’s no sugar- coating of prison life. Serious mental health, childhood abuse and drug issues prevail, and violence or the threat of it is persistent. The language is authentic too, not always easy to follow and very sweary, but it’s bold and brave TV. All4

MY MAD FAT DIARY

Coming-of-age tale Sharon Rooney won a Scottish BAFTA for her confident and sensitive portrayal of troubled teenager Rae (below) in this celebrated comedy drama following her as she leaves a psychiatric hospital and reconnects with her friend Chloe (Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer) and Chloe’s gang. She has many of the same concerns as all teenage girls – namely boys, boys and more boys – but all Rae really cares about is being normal. It’s frank, earthy and honest in its depiction of mental illness, and Rooney is a revelation. All4
