In each season of The Sopranos, Mob boss Tony faced a different threat to his criminal empire. In each season of Boardwalk Empire, kingpin Nucky Thompson does much the same, but in the 1920s and under Prohibition. One of his most memorable long-term foes is Al Capone (the chameleonic Stephen Graham, above), but the one that burns brightest is an Emmy award-winning Bobby Cannavale as hot-headed Gyp Rosetti in season three. Acting aside, the other big draw of this show is the look – the pilot alone, directed by Martin Scorsese, cost more than £13 million.
