‘Music is life,’ said the
Danish composer Carl Nielsen, and his powerful Symphony No 4, known as The Inextinguishable, is all about life. The idea for the work came to Nielsen in 1914 and, in 1916, during a time of great darkness and despair, this symphony, celebrating ‘the elemental will to live’, received its premiere. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra play this life-affirming masterpiece tonight in a concert that will bring a blaze of light and energy to our own dark times.
