MARRIAGE

9PM, BBC1

Episode two of Stefan Golaszewski’s domestic dramedy, and if you’d formed the same first impression of Jess’s boyfriend as her parents, he does nothing to change your mind. One of the joys of this show is how it constantly defies your expectations, showing you the moments normally left on the cutting-room floor (those long, natural silences), and it’s also as much about what we don’t see or hear as what we do: Ian has a job interview, but we don’t need to be in the room with him to know it doesn’t go well. There are more moments of great tenderness between Ian and Emma, interspersed with scenes that are positively excruciating, as well as subtle omissions and slow-building tension. Marvellous. All four episodes are on iplayer.
