HMP STYAL: WOMEN BEHIND BARS

9PM, CH5 ★★★ Located in a village in leafy Cheshire and partly comprising buildings that used to be an orphanage for destitute children, Styal is a closed category prison that houses a diverse range of female prisoners. Young offenders serve time there alongside murderers and, perhaps most shockingly of all, the prison also has a mother and baby unit. This one-off documentary hears from former staff and ex-inmates, who describe what life is like inside Styal, and asks if prison is the best place for the majority of women, many of them vulnerable, who are serving time for relatively minor offences.
