My weekend

What I’m watching... I’ve been rewatching Unorthodox on Netflix. It’s a salutary reminder that some extreme religions violate our humanity and treat women abominably. The American sitcom Modern Family (below), also on Netflix, about a wacky Californian family, has been welcome light relief. What I’m reading... Harry Hill’s autobiography Fight: Thirty Years Not Quite At The Top, in which he reveals how he made the switch from junior doctor to comedian. I was surprised to learn he used to bomb on stage which just shows that success is often only achieved after many failures. What I’m listening to... The comedy podcast Godcast, from acerbic US writer David Javerbaum. The premise is that God sits down with big names in showbiz for conversations about the human experience and the mysteries of the universe.

What I’m cooking... A weekend breakfast would be fried eggs on fried bread with honey, seasoned with salt and pepper. Everyone who has tried it compliments me on my superb culinary invention.

My favourite restaurant... A Persian restaurant called Gandum in East Sheen in London for Fesenjan – a delicious chicken stew with a brown pomegranate and walnut sauce.

My favourite walk... The north beach at Felixstowe with its beautiful seafront gardens, along the River Orwell in nearby Nacton, or round Ipswich Haven Marina with its restaurants and coffee shops.

Weekend treat... I love taking off and driving in any direction until I reach the sea or booking a hotel in a remote place for some solitude. On tour I lie in bed and trawl through Twitter to see what I’m outraged by, think up a brilliant tweet in response and post it, then check with great neediness to see if my number of followers has gone up. I often find

I’ve managed to lose 80 of them.

Perfect weekend away... Prague. I lived in the former Czechoslovakia, and there’s a vibe there like no other.
