The multiverse – the idea of infinite universes – is a trend in movies at the moment, but none tackles it better than this exciting, emotional and surprisingly funny tale. Chinese-american mother Evelyn (Michelle Yeoh) is at her wits’ end with her family and struggling launderette in a film that fuses everyday life with a superhero plot about the end of everything, and fills it with astounding fight sequences that Yeoh, no stranger to martial arts, took on herself. Yet it never loses track of its emotional beginnings, and by the end it becomes one of those rare films that gives you everything.
