An egomaniac with a talent for annoying people, Swedish detective Evert Backstrom (Kjell Bergqvist, above) would be an easy man for his police colleagues to hate – if only he wasn’t such an absolute genius at solving murders. Series one of this gritty crime drama sees him trying to work out how a woman seems to have died twice, while series two (which recently arrived on Acorn) puts Backstrom himself under the spotlight when he becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation. Played with brilliantly self-centred intensity by Bergqvist, Backstrom is a TV detective you’ll love to hate.
