There are few comedy characters as big, instantly recognisable and reluctantly loveable as down-at-heel Scottish creation Rab C Nesbitt. Played with gurning charm and a frequently impenetrable Glaswegian accent by the brilliant Gregor Fisher (right), the heavydrinking chancer graduated from show-stealing sketches in BBC2’S Naked Video to his own sitcom series in 1988. Filling up the spaces in and around Rab with a selection of almost equally dysfunctional characters (especially his epically long-suffering wife Mary, who was played with hard-faced but soft-eyed fury by Two Doors Down’s Elaine C Smith) resulted in one of the 1990s’ rudest and funniest comedy hits.
