Chickie Donohue (right), before setting off to show his support for the boys on the front in Apple’s movie which, incredibly, is based on a true story. The drive to accurately represent that story is high on the film’s agenda – the real Donohue was part of the filming process, and the shoot in Thailand was so immersive that it had Efron rattled. ‘The scenes in the trenches felt very real,’ he reflected. The High School Musical star is terrific and is barely off the screen, but look out too for his big co-stars, Russell Crowe as a war photographer who joins him and Bill Murray as a bartender. The film itself starts out as a caper but, ultimately, it is about war, and that lightness gives way to something deeper. From Friday, Apple TV+
