DESERT ISLAND DISCS SUNDAY NIGHT IS MUSIC NIGHT

SUNDAY, 11.15AM, RADIO4

Calmly, cheerfully, Jay Blades walks through The Repair Shop, where his fellow craftsmen and women are restoring broken things to their former glory. Jay knows all about being broken. He grew up in a tough part of London, where he was bullied by racists and left school hardly able to read. This morning the TV presenter and furniture restorer joins Lauren Laverne to pick his records, book and luxury and talk about his destitute past and the way his life turned around.

SUNDAY, 8PM, RADIO 2

Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s songs are full of stories. There’s Always Something There To

Remind Me, 24 Hours From Tulsa and Do You Know The Way To San Jose?, like so many of the duo’s hits, deliver more than a great tune. In this concert celebrating their songwriting partnership, the BBC Concert Orchestra, with guest singers Graham Bickley, Mary Carewe, Abbie Osman and Sarah Lark, gives us a fine selection of songs about the broken-hearted, the restless, the unfaithful and ‘all the stars that never were’.
