SIMON MAYO’S ESSENTIAL ALBUMS
SATURDAY, 3PM, SCALA RADIO
Classical music abounds with maestros of great talent and even greater eccentricities. The late Glenn Gould, born 90 years ago this week, is one of that number. He was said to have hummed instead of crying as a baby and would waggle his fingers as if itching to get to a piano. You can hear him muttering and humming during his recordings, but the brilliance and intensity of his playing cuts through this distraction. Simon celebrates Glenn’s genius by playing his eccentric recording of Mozart’s 18th Piano Sonata.
