THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

(2014) 12 ◆ 11PM, CH4 ★★★★ Turning one (relatively slim) book into three films was a stretch, but this conclusion to Peter Jackson’s fantasy trilogy features some truly spectacular battles as Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his dwarf friends face a vast horde of killer Orcs.

(2015) PG ● 10.30PM, BBC1 ★★★★ The formula of the original is re-created for this sentimental yet charming sequel. Richard Gere is the new boy joining Judi Dench (right), Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and other British stars in Jaipur as they try to make the most of later life in the hotel run by Dev Patel.
