Pick of The DAY

THE REPAIR SHOP

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ Bookbinder Chris Shaw faces a task of epic proportions when a huge Bible that was purchased by Silvano Griffithfrancis’s mother when she was new to Christianity in the 1960s is brought in for repair. A unicycle that comes from a family of variety performers, a wooden table that’s flooded with memories of a late grandfather and a romantic keepsake that’s seen better days are also on the to-do list this week.

HANDMADE: BRITAIN’S BEST WOODWORKER 8PM, CH4

★★★★

In the second episode of The Great British Carve Off, every second counts for the nine remaining enthusiasts (including Tanya, right) as they take on the big build challenge to make a free-standing, hand-crafted clock inspired by an important time in their lives. A chance to win immunity from elimination comes in the form of the skills challenge, where they must reproduce a bunch of realistic roses from delicate pieces of wood planed from a block of ash. But which woodworker will prove they’re blooming marvellous – and which will be leaving the competition?

DOC MARTIN 9PM, ITV

★★★★

The grumpy doctor (Martin Clunes) is made even grumpier this week by the arrival of a herbalist in the village, and he ends up having to pick up the pieces of her ill-informed medical advice. Meanwhile, Chicken the dog works his way into Martin’s good books when he raises the alarm that

Ruth (Eileen Atkins) has a blood clot from her recent travels, and there are two great guest stars as the long goodbye continues:

Downton Abbey’s Mrs Patmore (Lesley Nicol) plays a wild swimmer with migraine problems, while Cold Feet’s Hermione Norris drops by as an old flame of Martin’s.

GRAND DESIGNS 9PM, CH4

★★★★

Their plot had a history of 26 failed planning applications, but in 2020, Mike and Sarah were granted permission to construct a 21st-century version of a historic Derbyshire longhouse, with a build budget of £945,000. Kevin Mccloud

heads to the Dales to follow the couple’s progress, which is complicated by some huge challenges including a fiendishly complex roof design, a lack of materials and an unexpected family bereavement.
