This offbeat US show – about a suburban mum with dissociative identity disorder (DID) – has a tour de force performance from Toni Collette, which won her an Emmy and a Golden Globe. She stars as Tara Gregson, an artist and mother who slips in and out of her alternative personalities, or ‘alters’, ranging from beer-swilling trucker to 1950s housewife (above). From an idea by Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw, it’s written by Diablo Cody (the Oscar-winning writer of Juno) and the punchy script helps elevate it from freak show to a considered snapshot of family life and mental illness.
